We just finished the first month of 2017 and it was…. um… hectic? I mean, the first 2 weeks of January was filled with my finals, I went into a slump that made me can’t do anything, and Chinese new year at the final week, which means meeting with lots of relatives.

October Wrap Up and November TBR

I’ve been obsessed with K-drama haha! I managed to finish W even though I was on finals 😀 Speaking of finals, the result is already out and I get excellent scores! I am so happy🙏

Also I finally started Suits and I AM OBSESSED. I watched the first two seasons in 4 days and I had to stop myself to watch the 3rd season directly. I need a break and focus on my study omg.

And finally, I also posted the Ruler of Books tag, which I was tagged ages ago.

On Growing Up and Letting Go

Ruler of Books Tag

ruler-of-books

Hi everyone, today’s post is going to be a book tag. I’ve been tagged by Cloe @ Mornings and Epilogues in August (OOPS), so thank you and sorry Cloe! Life has been really busy and I just keep putting off writing this post for some reasons. Anyways, let’s just get started!

What book would you make everyone read?

It will always will and always be The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. Hands down the best trilogy I’ve ever read. Buuuut I guess you guys are tired with me mentioning this book every chance I got, so I’m going to answer with THE BOOK THIEF and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. The Book Thief set during WW2, and TKAM set during 1936 in USA, where discrimination against black people were crazy. Both books are narrated by children, and I just love how pure their point of view is. They are children, and they did not question whether the people they are helping is Jews or Black, all Liesl and Scout knows is it’s human, and they need to help.

Bonus points in TKAM, in which Scout is the only one who’s even being decent with Boo Radley.

Those are the books you need to read. Those are the books I encouraged you to read. Reading from children really made me realize that hate is teached, not felt.

What would you abolish from book construction?

The alpha male trope. You know, the brooding male hero, that stalks the main interests, that growl or kiss roughly, that make the decision for the female love interest, and sometimes also abusive. I’m sorry, but heroines can make their decision without the male hero saving the day.

What author would you commission to write every book ever? OR what author would you commission to write a book for you?

I would definitely ask Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor, with extra from Rick Riordan. Leigh Bardugo’s world building is very vivid and complex, while Laini Taylor’s prose is amazingggg. Rick Riordan creates amazing sassy characters while incorporating a lot of mythology in it. Despite their different writing styles, combined together I think they’ll create AMAZING books.

What book would you demote to the library basement to make room for new books?

Probably RED RISING by Pierce Brown. I REALLY WANTED TO READ THIS BOOK. But it was very confusing, with all the tech-from-the-future and social class constantly mentioned but nothing explained. I am the type of person that need to understand and be immersed in the world building before building connections with the characters. No world building = no bonding = bye bye book.

What cover artist would you commission to paint a beautiful mural?

Oh man, there are so many beautiful covers out there from a lot of cover artists. BUTTTT my current favorite cover artist are definitely people who made Strange the Dreamer cover. Both the UK and the US cover is GORGEOUS.

What character’s face would you put on a coin?

Reyna. I think the tradition of “putting a face on a coin” started by the Roman Empire, and Reyna is from Camp Jupiter. She’s a strong leader and praetor, and also very skillful at battle, so she’s really fitting for a coin.

What book would you give the Ruler of Books award of 2016?

I would say THE WRATH AND THE DAWN by Renee Ahdieh which is, hands down my favorite book I read this year. It’s just p e r f e c t. The atmosphere, the world building, the FOOD, the characters, I just adore everything!

On Growing Up and Letting Go

Who Am I?

o

Hi guys, it’s time for another get-to-know-me kind of post. I just want to start the year off by letting you guys know more about myself. I saw this tag around November-ish at Cassidy @ Quartzfeather and Hawwa @ Hawwaetc blogs, so go check them out!

What is the meaning of my name? Tasya

According to google, Tasya is actually a Russian name, short version of Anastasia. The name means “the one who will be reborn” or “resurrection”.

Fun story: My name was supposed to be Anastasia. But I was born in the aftermath of the 1998 riot, and my parents fear that the name will be too Christian for my safety, so they change it into the general Tasya.

What is my Myers-Briggs Personality Types? {link}

I always get either ENTP (THE DEBATER) or INTP (THE LOGICIAN). Granted, I always confused with myself whether I’m an extrovert or an introvert. People who knew me will think I am extrovert because how loud and sarcastic I am, but actually I think I’m introvert? I enjoyed spending time with friends, but I always feel drained and need to “recharge”. I also find it hard to introduce myself to group of people, but if it’s one-on-one situation, or one-on-two, I would definitely initiate the talks.

So what am I???

Enough guessing, let’s take a look at the result.

screenshot-118

Apparently, I am one of 3% of the population with INTP personality. Some of the most famous INTP: Bill Gates, Ellen Page, Kristen Stewart and Einstein.

I am so not like Einstein. I mean, I keep failing physics and math damn it.

They love patterns, and spotting discrepancies between statements could almost be described as a hobby, making it a bad idea to lie to an INTP. This makes it ironic that INTPs’ word should always be taken with a grain of saltThis part is totally true! Further, with Thinking (T) as one of their governing traits, INTPs are unlikely to understand emotional complaints at all, and their friends won’t find a bedrock of emotional support in them. People with the INTP personality type would much rather make a series of logical suggestions for how to resolve the underlying issue, a perspective that is not always welcomed by their Feeling (F) companions.Also true, I’m known as the “cold and heartless” one in my friend circle. The one thing that really holds INTPs back is their restless and pervasive fear of failure. INTP personalities are so prone to reassessing their own thoughts and theories, worrying that they’ve missed some critical piece of the puzzle, that they can stagnate, lost in an intangible world where their thoughts are never truly applied. Overcoming this self-doubt stands as the greatest challenge INTPs are likely to face.

Some of my best traits, according to the test are great analyst, open-minded, enthusiastic, objective and honest.

I know I should’ve gone to law school. (again, this is another case of me second guessing). But it seems like law, forensics, and laboratory research are also the perfect career for me, so I guess I’m still in the right path (I’m in biology major).

But… some of my weaknesses are: Insensitive, absent-minded, second guess myself, and conscending (oops?).

What is my zodiac sign? Leo

fd119d7440bf516808bd035bb16b2cef

From what I’ve read during the 18 years of my life, Leo always characterised as the zodiac that loves spotlight, natural leader, proud, etc. I don’t know about me, but I do feel like that to some extent, but not extremely.

What is my Hogwarts house? {link}

Hufflepuff! Long time before Pottermore changed into the Pottermore that exists nowadays, I was sorted into Hufflepuff too! I logged in literally everyday and duelled to earn points for my house. Good times.

According to many sources, the traits of Hufflepuff is loyal, hardworking and dependable. I don’t know about the hardworking part, I’m a pretty laidback person…

What are my learning styles? {link}

My results are basically equal between four styles. I got 10 for aural and read/write, and 9 for visual and kinesthetics. I guess it means I can study with any methods available.

Am I right or left brain dominant? {link}

Again, my result is equal between left and right brain. Does that means that I’m good at everything I do? Or does that mean that I am just a plain, mediocre person? 😂

What is my blood type?

A. I don’t really know what this mean. Maybe that if anything happened to me I will have plenty of blood supply since A can receive from O and A😉

What career am I meant to have? {link}

Writer. I’m not confident in my writing skills, but I do love to write. According to the result:

You have a skill for language, your imagination is vast and you are artistic and creative. Your brain is overflowing with ideas, and all you have to do is get a piece of paper and share it with the world. You were born to turn words into magical stories.

Which Divergent faction do I belong in? {link}

Erudite. Well Erudite is potrayed as the devil in the series, but I do find some corelation with their thirst for knowledge and love of books! I mean, don’t you want to know how the universe works or how we are what we are?

What does my birth order say about me? {link}

I am the firstborn, so according to the article, it seems that I am a natural leader, ambitious and responsible. I am ambitious, but I don’t know about the responsible part….

Now that you guys know more about me, I’d love to get to know you guys better! I tag:

Changing of the Seasons… In YA Love Interest

pexels-photo-113776

For as long as I can remember, I always fall for the bad boys, the villains of the story.

Yep, you hear that right. And I think most of you fall for them too. At least once in your life, or at least during the ya paranormal phase in your life.

Or is it just me?

They don’t have to be the villains exactly, but they are the rebels, the angsty, brooding love interest. The twisted, manipulative and magnetic one. The daredevils, and the charmer. Some of the examples are Damon Salvatore and The Darkling. You can totally see that my type is the tall dark stranger right?😉

This post basically happened because I have sudden enlightement when I was reading Dangerous Boys by Abigail Haas. Here we have love triangle and -you guessed it!- one of the love interest is twisted, manipulative, possesive, and “hot”.

I should’ve fall for him, looking at my past resume. But in reality, he raised all the red flags for me and made me so anxious I had to stop reading. And this, made me realize that I don’t like the bad guys anymore.

I don’t mean that I will never fall for the villains ever again, they are interesting to read and have the grayest moral I’ve ever read about. What I don’t like from them is often, they are manipulative and violent. They do twisted things but for some reason, we (me, other readers, and the heroine) keep falling for them.

Nowadays, I always fall for the funny guys. I guess I always have, but always overshadowed by the bad guys, and this time I just realized it for real. No matter how dire the situation is, how sad their friends are, they always managed to cheer others up.

Exhibit A: Nikolai Lantsov over anyone from the Dregs

Nikolai Lantsov has existed since the Grisha trilogy, yet I just realized the full extent of my love for him. In Grisha trilogy, my love to him was overshadowed by my love to the Darkling. But Six of Crows, for some reasons, have no guys that made me fall for them in “I LOVE YOU ” way, so of course, when Nikolai appeared I go all crazy.

Now, if it’s pre-2016 me speaking, I would certainly fall for Kaz. He’s totally my type. But the reality? No. If it’s the Dregs we’re talking about, my favorite would be Wylan, Jesper, Kaz then Matthias. Wylan made me fall by his naivete, and Jesper by his humour. I should’ve fall for Kaz, but what happened???

I didn’t. I chose Wylan, Jesper, and Nikolai instead.

Exhibit B: Kenji Kishimoto over Warner or Adam

Kenji is one constant bright spot of sunshine throughout this dark and gritty series. Again, if it’s pre-2016 me, I would’ve fall for Warner. I swear I would.

Actually when I first read Shatter Me, I did fell for Warner.

And then I mature and read the next 2 books and as much as I love chapter 42, I still love Kenji Kishimoto the best. I loveee the way he jokes and lighten up the situation, yet can step up and be leader when the situation calls for it. I love how he’s such a good friend he snapped at Juliette during her mopey dopey period.

In short, he’s the type of (boy)friend I would fall for.

Exhibit C: Leo Valdez over anyone from the seven

We have Percy (!!!!), we have Jason who is the poster boy, and we have Frank who has amazing heart and courage (bless him). And yet I fall for Leo. Again, his jokes really makes me love him, no matter what the situation he will always try to lighten it up and made his friends laugh ❤

wreath7-black

Does this mean that I have matured? I think yes, and I think I also started to see the problem with bad boys or alpha male or tough guy trope that exists widely in YA. It’s not necessarily about me, but if you think deeper, would you like those tropes as your boyfriend? Well, I’m not, and I don’t want anyone to have boyfriends like that. It might not happen to me or anyone near me, but literature provides some kind of “mirror” to our real life and can set unrealistic and harmful standards to young people. I don’t want someone who “growl” at me, or breaking rules at every turn, become aggresive and protective. I don’t want someone who “threaten” me in the name of love, angsty and dark and keep me wondering about him. I DON’T WANT SOMEONE WHO MANIPULATES ME, just because he loves me and wants the best for me. No thanks, we women are capable of deciding our needs and what’s best for us.

Or at least if someone want to make a decision for me, I would like them to talk things first with me. Making decisions without my consent just shows the lack of respect on his part.

giphy5

I mean, I’m pretty sure as much as you love Aaron Warner, you wouldn’t want him as your real-life boyfriend. Just because he’s abused and have terrible past doesn’t mean he can manipulates you and fill you with guilt for almost killing a child.

Bottom line is: I’m over them. And I seriously can’t believe those tropes are still exists in YA nowadays! Realizing the problems really help me realize how creepy they are actually, and how it can paint a picture that manipulation and physical things are okay because he loves you.

It took me really long to realize it (18 years!!!) but going to uni, being exposed to different things and being in a relationship really makes me see what’s wrong with these tropes.

this post is so messy and incoherent omg i’m so sorry. i’m terrible at writing discussions.

Do you prefer the villains or the heroes? And why do you think these tropes still exist in YA books?

ROYAL BASTARDS by Andrew Shvarts

Being a bastard blows. Tilla would know. Her father, Lord Kent of the Western Province, loved her as a child, but cast her aside as soon as he had trueborn children.

At sixteen, Tilla spends her days exploring long-forgotten tunnels beneath the castle with her stablehand half brother, Jax, and her nights drinking with the servants, passing out on Jax’s floor while her castle bedroom collects dust. Tilla secretly longs to sit by her father’s side, resplendent in a sparkling gown, enjoying feasts with the rest of the family. Instead, she sits with the other bastards, like Miles of House Hampstedt, an awkward scholar who’s been in love with Tilla since they were children.

Then, at a feast honoring the visiting princess Lyriana, the royal shocks everyone by choosing to sit at the Bastards’ Table. Before she knows it, Tilla is leading the sheltered princess on a late-night escapade. Along with Jax, Miles, and fellow bastard Zell, a Zitochi warrior from the north, they stumble upon a crime they were never meant to witness.

Rebellion is brewing in the west, and a brutal coup leaves Lyriana’s uncle, the Royal Archmagus, dead—with Lyriana next on the list. The group flees for their lives, relentlessly pursued by murderous mercenaries; their own parents have put a price on their heads to prevent the king and his powerful Royal Mages from discovering their treachery.

The bastards band together, realizing they alone have the power to prevent a civil war that will tear their kingdom apart—if they can warn the king in time. And if they can survive the journey . . .

December Wrap Up & January TBR

wrap-up

It’s another December/January edition, which is always weird for me to write. It’s not only the beginning and end of a month, but also a year! This post also come out late because I was (and still) really busy with finals😭😭😭

October Wrap Up and November TBR

I can’t say that December was a good reading month… I mean I had 2 DNFs! There are also books that I’ve been wanting to read for so long that turned out to be dissapointing… Let’s hope January will be a better month!

  1. GLITTER by Aprilynne Pike {ARC} // ✰✰✰
  2. CHRISTMAS AT THE OFFICE by Matt Dunn {ARC} // DNF
  3. FAITHFUL by Alice Hoffman {ARC} // ✰✰✰✰
  4. RED RISING by Pierce Brown // DNF
  5. DEATHLESS by Catherynne M Valente // ✰✰✰
  6. CROOKED KINGDOM by Leigh Bardugo // ✰✰✰✰.5

October Wrap Up and November TBR

  1. PHANTOM by Susan Kay
  2. THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN by Rosani Chokni
  3. HEIDI by Johanna Spyri

I only have 3 books on my tbr this month because I have finals for the first 2 weeks of January (starting tomorrow!!!!) so I don’t think I will be able to read much. I also won’t be able to post much except for T5W.

October Wrap Up and November TBR

The first two weeks of December were very relaxing. It’s the last 2 weeks of the semester so we don’t have much going on, except for the hectic christmas preparation. The chaos started on Dec 18 when my grandma died. I mean, there’s nothing predictable about death, but some of my families really wanted to follow the chinese burial tradition, while the others want to use only the catholic tradition. It was very hectic because we need to mashed those 2 traditions, prepared everything needed, flew back to my grandma’s place, and other stuff. And then unfortunately I have a lot of work that I need to submit for the finals, which I didn’t do because I thought I could do it during the holidays. Well turns out that I can’t and now my life has been really really chaotic working between 3 papers😭😵

October Wrap Up and November TBR

untitled4

Like usual, I started the month by posting last month’s recap. And then I did the Happiness tag, discussion about #ownvoices, and christmas special the 12 days of christmas tag. I also posted review of Song of Achilles, a review anthology, and gif review of Crooked Kingdom. For top 5 wednesday, I talked about books that I want to read in 2017, series that went downhill, and characters I want to invite to my NYE party. And finally, my final post of 2016, I posted a yearly review of my life✨

On Growing Up and Letting Go

2016: A Year in Review

2016

Here we are, at the end of a year and dawn of another year. 2016 as a year is not a bad year for me, virtually and real life situation. So here it is, my final post in the year of 2016, a yearly rewind of the books I read, things I watch, and all the happenings in my life for the past 365 days.

2016 is not my best reading year. Quantitatively, yes, it’s the most reading I’ve ever done my whole life. Qualitatively? No. There are so many dissapointing books this year and some of them are my most anticipated ones to read! According to my year in books, my average rating this year is 3.3😱 I think I’ve become pickier… I read more contemporary at the first half of 2016 and enjoyed most of them though, so that’s a plus.

1

Number of books read: 88/80 books

7 rereads, 5 DNFs, 19 ARCs

Favorite fantasy: THE WRATH AND THE DAWN by Renee Ahdieh. This book just blew me away with the gorgeous writing, magic, delicious food, and amazing main characters. {my review}

Honorary mention: CROOKED KINGDOM by Leigh Bardugo {my review}

Favorite contemporary: ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES by Jennifer Niven. THIS BOOK IS JUST BEAUTIFUL GUYS. {my review}

Honorary mention: MY HEART AND OTHER BLACK HOLES by Jasmine Warga {my review} and  EVERY LAST WORD by Tamara Ireland Stone {my review}

Favorite historical fiction: THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller. This one is about the Trojan war from the Patroclus pov. It’s absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. {my review}

Favorite middle grade: THE HIDDEN ORACLE by Rick Riordan. This book is just perfect. Apollo is such a fantastic narrator with his sass and narcissism, but we can also see the other, more fatherly side of the Olympians. Also, Solangelo. {my review}

Favorite classic: DRACULA by Bram Stoker. It’s absolutely creepy, the writing creates such a dark and terrifying atmosphere that is perfect for Halloween. {my review}

Favorite New OTP: Shazi/Khalid

Favorite OTP read this year: Wylan/Jesper

Favorite New Characters: Theodore Finch. I just want to hug him and shield him from the rest of the world.

Favorite Characters: Nikolai Lantsov, the love and light of my life.

Favorite New Crush: Khalid Ibn al-Rashid

Favorite Crush: Khalid Ibn al-Rashid

Favorite world building: Khorasan. It is exactly the setting I would have imagine for Arabian Nights.

Most dissapointing: CARRY ON by Rainbow Rowell. I really like the Simon and Baz part in Fangirl, but Carry On truly dissapoint me. The world building was too similar with HP, Simon is really whiny, and I just can’t connect with the rest of the characters. {my review}

I set myself with some challeges, and also joined some reading challenges. I failed at some, but I mostly completed them so yay! You can see my progress here.

2

As you guys know, this year I graduated high school and entered college. I was really pissed, fed up and tired at that final semester that I keep wishing for time to move faster to the graduation. After the graduation, I can’t stop wishing that I could come back to high school. It wasn’t perfect; I mean I had to woke up at 5 because my school started at 6:30, extra class until 17:00, too many tasks, too many tests, rigid rules, and teachers. But the friends made everything worth it. We always had each other’s back no matter how hard the situation is, and always break the rules together. I will never forget all the detentions and late night escapade we’ve done 🙌

But then, when we lost people, we always gain the new ones. I met some amazing people in the uni and I can’t wait to spend more time with them. It took me a while honestly to find the “click” person, but I finally found them.

While it was a pretty good year for me personally, it’s not a good year for my country. There are too many instabilites and clashes between groups that’s raising the red flags for me. I hope things will cool down soon, for our sake, the current people, for the future generations, and for all the heroes and founding fathers that fight with all their might in uniting our nation.

On a more negative and personal things, this is the year where I have such a close brush with death. I’ve been pretty sheltered from death during my 18 years of existence, I’ve never been allowed to attend a funeral or saw a corpse when I was a kid, and had to take care of my sister when I was older. This year, I lost my childhood friend due to dengue fever, my friends lost some of their parents, and on December 17th, I lost my only grandparents left, my grandmother. When you’ve never had contact with death before and suddenly have to attend a lot of funerals, it was really overwhelming. Especially since you have to take care one of those funerals. It really left me exhausted mentally and emotionally at the end of this year😔

Let me (almost) end this post with list of things I’m thankful for in 2016.

  1. I’m thankful for graduating high school. There were moments when I was doing the exam that I think I won’t graduate because how hard it was but I did. We did. We all did.
  2. I am so thankful that my batch started school together and finish together.
  3. I am thankful for all the friends I met during high school. Good or bad, the memories will stay with me forever.
  4. I am thankful that I got in into a university, studying things that I like.
  5. I am thankful that I had an easy transition and can live alone pretty well.
  6. I am thankful for all the memories I made this year.
  7. I am thankful for all the friends I lost and gain this year.
  8. I am thankful of all the opportunities I had this year.
  9. I am thankful that I finally learned how to drive??
  10. I am thankful for Descendants of the Sun. You ruin my finals but at the same time is my light and love of my life.
  11. I am thankful for all the books I read this year, the amazing ones, the dissapointing ones, and for publishers for trusting me with ARCs.
  12. I am thankful for Fantastic Beasts. All the years I’m waiting for another Wizarding World thingy and this movie doesn’t dissapoint.
  13. I am thankful that I took the chance and move my blog to wordpress. Best decision ever.
  14. I am thankful for all the rains happened this year. YAY.
  15. And finally, I am thankful for all of you guys who still read my blog up until now! Thank you for paying attention to my little corner on the internet❤✨

Now we come to the part where I made some resolutions that may or may not work in 2017. Personally, I want to get my driver’s license in 2017. I’ve been learning and I am still not that good yet, but I do want to get my license next year. I also want to take more risks and take as many chances as I could next year. One of my biggest regrets this year is how lax I was and how I let fear made me say no so some really good opportunities. So there. I want to save more and splurge myself only necessary, not on trivial things like trinkets but big things like travelling or getting myself a camera. I really want to exercise more! Like I made it as a goal this year and it went well during the holidays, but on school months I only do like 1 exercise per month #fail. And finally I just want to be happy. It’s not like I’m not happy, but we’re just constantly worrying about things and people, decisions and past events, and I just want to decrease the overthinking and channel it to other positive things 😊

Reading and blogging wise, I joined the discussion challenge because I want to post more than reviews and tags on my blog more often ✌ I  also plan to read 70 books in 2017, less than 2016 because I just want to take it more slowly. I still want to read classics every month and more diverse books please! 🙌 I also want to be able to dnf books more often instead of forcing to read them until finish, because well, it sucks and always put me on reading slump. Finally, I want to learn more about coding! It’s fascinating but currently I don’t have much spare time so hopefully 2017 will be kinder.

🎆Have an amazing 2017!🎆
