12 Days of Blogmas // Day 6: Disappointing Reads

On the 6th day of blogmas….

We’re going to discuss about my disappointing reads. As many of you already know, 2017 is not my best reading year. For the first three months, I was in a reading slump. Then I couldn’t find a book that truly blow me away until recently. So yeah, I have A LOT of disappointment to tell you about on this post. ALL ABOARD THE DISAPPOINTMENT SHIP!

My blogmas day 5 || Swetlana’s day 6

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

I remember how excited I was for this book… a cinderella retelling with a lot of fandom aspect in it, and also a common person/celeb romance! However, I found that this book has too many fandom things, it overshadows everything and cause the romance to be unbelieveable. I love how Starfield connects Elle to her parents, but her connection with Darien is just unbelieveable.

Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

A.K.A THE BIGGEST LET DOWN OF 2017. I loooove Ahdieh THE WRATH AND THE DAWN and even though THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER dissapoint me, I still had high hopes for FITM. I love Mulan and I know Ahdieh’s writing and stories are captivating based on TWATD. However, I was very dissapointed when I read it. First of all, IT IS NOT A MULAN RETELLING!!! It sets in Japan and it’s all about revenge instead of honor like Mulan. Other than the cross-dressing aspect, I couldn’t see more Mulan in it. In my opinion, it’s more 47 Ronin than Mulan, so the marketing is totally misleading. The story and characters itself was unmemorable and the romance was a bit “meh”. I’m still curious about the magic though, so I’m going to keep reading for that.

Aurabel by Laura Dockrill

I totally adore LORALI and even though the ending wrapped the story quite well, I wanted more. Which is why I was very excited when I found out about Aurabel, finally another book and hopefuly more Ableglares! However, it can’t be any different from my expectations. The prose become too purple for my taste, Lorali became naively annoying instead of adorable like she was, and the whole new characters and underwater politics are ridiculous. I couldn’t even finish this book.

Reawakened by Colleen Houck

I love all kind of mythology. I already heard some criticsm on Colleen Houck but I tried to ignore it, and anyway that cover is too gorgeous to be passed on! I should’ve listened to those warnings because while it has great the plot, the characters are very Bella Swan/Edward Cullen-esque for my taste. Nope.

Promise of Shadows by Justina Ireland

A greek mythology with Harpy as the main character, how rare is that! It was what excites me, and while the story is a bit predictable, the powers and mythology it displayed was cool. Yet again, I have problems with the characters. Our main character, Zephyr, started out great but as the book goes she felt more like Bella Swan throwing a temper tantrum.

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

Everytime I think about this book, I just want to bury myself in disappointment. The first book, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, was so awesome that on my second read, it still blew me away. Yet when I finish reading this book, the final one in the series, I want to sell it asap. How could it go from adoration to hatred so quickly???? I am so dissapointed.

How’s your reading year? Any books disappoint you this year?

  1. Awww I’m sorry you didn’t have the best reading year! πŸ˜… At least, if you end up finding an amazing book that blows you away soon, the amazingness would be magnified so much more by the fact that you read so many meh books beforehands? πŸ˜„

  2. I’m sorry you had a disappointing reading year, at times! I was and still am eager to read Flame in the Mist, but I’ll admit that I am a bit less enthusiastic after hearing so many mixed reviews from bloggers I trust ahah. I’ll get to it someday, but… with less expectations, that’s for sure ahha πŸ™‚ Great post! πŸ™‚

  3. I loved Flame in the Mist! I’m sorry it was a no for you. Maybe is that I never really care about comparison made in the blurb. It’s more marketing than something else. I think that I got wrapped up in the story.
I’m a difficult relationship with the last book of ADOSAB series. I cannot read a book with pages spent to describe something as a kiss or something like that. I just can’t. It was a bittersweet end anyway. So I’m not really so disappointed.
