Does TBR List Actually Work for Me?

While choosing 5 books for my latest Top 5 Wednesday, which is about books that I want to read before the year ends (check it HERE), I went through my archive and realized that I’ve written a lot of TBRs previously.

No, I am not talking about those monthly TBRs. I’m talking about seasonal ones like for summer break or autumn, or end of year ones where I’m listing my most anticipated books for the following year. And you know what I realized by looking through these posts?

I barely read any of the books on that list.

When I made those list, it’s to help me see which books I need to prioritize over that period. But as the period goes, I ended up reading different books from what I listed, even though I knew I should be prioritizing them. In fact, the book I listed usually ended up untouched for YEARS before I actually read them.

Today I’m going to hurt your eyes and soul by compiling all the books I’ve promised to read since 2015, yet still unread until now. Even putting this list already stress me out and putting me in a bad mood because the pressure!!! So let’s just get started.

2015: Anticipated 2016 Relases

Books mentioned: LADY MIDNIGHT by Cassandra Clare // INTO THE DIM by Janet B. Taylor // THE IMPOSTOR QUEEN by Sarah Fine // THE FORBIDDEN WISH by Jessica Khoury // A FIERCE AND SUBTLE POISON by Samantha Mabry // BRIGHT SMOKE, COLD FIRE by Rosamund Hodge // THE MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor (this one is weird… it should be STRANGE THE DREAMER right?) // REBEL OF THE SANDS by Alwyn Hamilton // REIGN OF SHADOWS by Sophie Jordan // ASSASSIN’S HEART by Sarah Ahiers // THE SHADOW QUEEN by C.J Redwine

Actually read: THE FORBIDDEN WISH by Jessica Khoury (REVIEW HERE)

What I’m still interested to read: LADY MIDNIGHT by Cassandra Clare, THE IMPOSTOR QUEEN by Sarah Fine, and A FIERCE AND SUBTLE POISON by Samantha Mabry.

The rest…. well…. *quietly removes them from my goodreads tbr shelf*. We’re off with a bad start guys.

Unfortunately, no. I don’t think they work for me and as I mentioned earlier, they tend to stress me out because I feel the need to read SO MANY BOOKS. Playing catch up really burns me out, I even considered to step back for a moment. I also kept listing the same book over and over and over again (Strange the Dreamer, Summer of Chasing Mermaids, The Merciless) and tbh, it puts me off even more. I am a mood reader so my monthly tbr is actually a VERY loose tbr, but seeing the same book over and over again really stress me out.

Thank you for sticking out until the end of this post! What about you? Do you think TBRs really work for you?

  1. I don’t think putting books on my lists makes me more likely to read them either. I think it’s more just an indication of books I’m interested in/excited about at that moment. With the exception of series I want to finish I very seldom pay attention to lists like this. Oh well!

  2. lol same! I made a post yesterday for a June wrap up (my first wrap up) and I said I’ll mostly likely never make a TBR post because I never know what books i will or want to read. 😂 Sometimes I’ll even get the book but never read it. I think making this post was a great idea!
