July Screen Rambles (2019) // Monsters, Superheroes, and A Certain Fresh Prince

Screen

Welcome to another edition of Screen Rambles! In case you’re new to this blog or not know what is this series about, Screen Rambles is where I talked about all the shows and movies I’ve watched in the previous month in details. In short, this is where I ramble about them.

Stranger Things 3

I love this third season so much! The summer setting and the neon brightness of the settings really add to the “fun” ness of the story. It’s clear that these past two years we’ve been having the 80’s revival, but this season is Stranger Things is just the best, it captures the spirit of the 80’s!!!

I usually find the first half of the season usually hard to get through, but due to the lighthearted tone of this season, I went through the season in one sitting. Not only that the episodes are more fun, we also got to explore the characters’ lives and relationships more outside of hunting the Mindflayer. Everyone is growing up: the boys are having girlfriends and spending less time together (poor Will), while Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan are working. The progression felt very natural but amazing to see how proud we are on where they are now, seeing that we only know these characters for 3 seasons.

There is always the threat of the ~supernatural~ in Hawkins, and I think it’s pretty obvious who the main villain in this season is. The actor’s acting skills are amazing, but I’ve got to admit that I didn’t adore him as much as I hoped too/as much as others do. Just because someone has a terrible past, it doesn’t excuse them to do bad things!!!

I sobbed at two deaths in this season (hOW CRUEL). And yet, I can’t wait to watch season 4!

Daredevil Season 1

So after long deliberation, I finally started Daredevil! I tend to hate superheroes show, I didn’t like Agents of Shields and Legion, so I have pretty low hopes for this one. I only watch this because I want to watch Jessica Jones, tbh. Which I only want to watch because of David Tennant and Kristen Ritter! But anyways, I also love legal procedural drama so it should be somehow enjoyable for me.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t as interesting as I hoped it would be. I’ve heard that Daredevil is one of the best Marvel’s shows, but I didn’t find the storyline engaging, nor the fight sequence interesting. And there’s not enough lawyering! 😦

I also don’t find the main character anything special; I like Matt, with his wry wit and quick thinking. But Daredevil didn’t feel really genuine for me??? Like he always talking about making the city a better place, but I can’t feel like he’s actually mean it, you know. I find Fisk more believeable compared to him. Maybe because Fisk has a plan, while Daredevil just fight guys randomly on the street.

The most interesting characters for me are Vanessa and Foggy though! I love confident and smart Vanessa is, I’m interested to learn more about her. As for Foggy, I felt like he’s overshadowed by Karen and Matt’s storyline, but his quiet presence and kindness really stood out for me! Oh, and I also feel really bad for him because Matt keeps making decisions without telling him anything. Partnerships works both ways, Matt.

But yeah, I didn’t really enjoyed this so I stopped watching halfway through. I think I’ll just jump straight to Jessica Jones then.

Spiderman: Far From Home

I am both excited and scared for this movie. On one side, this reiteration of Spiderman always give us this young, vibrant and fun vibe that watching his storyline will be a guaranteed good time for me. But I know for sure that this movie will deal with the aftermath of Endgame, especially that certain death and I’m not sure I can handle that ahaha.

Anyways, as expected, this movie balances the grief and fun times really well. Endgame really changed him: he’s always eager to help out and sneak out to become Spiderman, but in this movie, he actually fought tooth and nail to become a “normal” teenagers for once, with crush and school trips. The romance is super cute, but idk I felt like MJ is different in this movie for me. But that’s teenagers with a crush, I guess.

They did Ned dirty in this movie, though.

I think the chemistry between the old gang is great, and the dynamics between Peter and Mysterio is undeniable. And since we all know Mysterio is actually a villain, it actually become sad to see how fast Peter latched unto him. Tbh I think Mysterio is a weak villain, and the reveal is too quick. Not the main reveal, but when Peter figured it out. It’s like too easy!

Overall, this movie is a great successor for Endgame. I still prefer Homecoming, but this one is an enjoyable too. The post-credit scene kills us all though, and I can’t wait how it’s going to be addressed in the subsequent movies!

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

And finally, the legendary show that is Fresh Prince of Bel-Air! I have watched episodes of this show randomly and loved it, but never watched it as a whole. I’ve been pretty stressed out lately, so I figure 20 minutes comedy should cheer me up.

And it did! I think this show ages really well, the humor and the topics discussed are still relevant (with exceptions on how Will viewed women). There are a lot of funny moments, but there are also a lot of serious topics and scenes discussed– mainly about prejudice against black people. I just finished season 1 now, but I’m sure going to watch the rest of the show!

  1. Ugh why am I the only person in the world who cannot seem to get into Stranger Things!? I have tried so many times and it just doesn’t keep my interest for whatever reason, and now at this point I think I have convinced myself that it won’t work. Glad it was so good (and heartbreaking!) though! And I absolutely agree about Fresh Prince. So many of the other shows of that era have NOT aged well, but it was so ahead of its time- plus Will Smith will always be awesome!

    1. No worries ahaha, I admit it was hard for me to get into too especially at the beginning. I was like “THIS is the show everyone is raving about???” But yeah, I did ended up falling for it 😀 Agreee ahhh watching Fresh Prince reminds me of the range Will’s acting could go, it’s amazing!

  2. I love that Fresh Prince of Bel Air is part of your list, even though it’s 2019, hahah. I really liked this show growing up, though my favorite has always been Everybody Hates Chris. I don’t think this show is as popular worldwide as it is in Brazil, but it’s definitely a funny show, kinda similar to Fresh Prince in the sense that it does discuss some more dense topics as well, while still being hilarious!
As for Spiderman: Far From Home, I think I’m probably the only person that just really can’t get into these movies. I love Ned and I completely agree that his character was really ignored as a sidekick during this movie to serve an unnecessary romantic plotline. I also feel like Mysterio’s motivations were pretty weak, especially when compared to other villains in the Spiderman franchise, and he didn’t feel as evil or as intimidating as I anticipated. But this summer, a lot of plans for MARVEL’s future were released and I’m super excited for all of them! Especially the new THOR ones!

  3. You’ve checked out some fantastic shows/movies lately! Sorry to hear that Daredevil wasn’t your cup of tea but I am glad to see that people are still revisiting Fresh Prince of Bel Air! It’s one of those rare sitcoms that I binged back in high school. Will Smith in his prime! 😀 And yes, yes, yes for Stranger Things! I can’t wait for the next season. I can’t imagine how much them kids will grow by then. 😮
