June Wrap Up & July TBR 2022

Hello hello everyone! The month of June is definitely a weird one- the first few weeks felt really fast but the last 2 weeks felt forever! I’ve been really enjoying June and actually anxious for July to come, but oh well who are we to stop the passage of time? 😭

  1. THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY by Jenny Han // 🌟🌟.5
  2. SIREN QUEEN by Nghi Vo {eARC} // DNF
  3. THE GHOST GARDEN by Emma Carroll // 🌟🌟
  4. IN THE VANISHER’S PALACE by Aliette de Bodard // 🌟🌟🌟
  5. CLAP WHEN YOU LAND by Elizabeth Acevedo // 🌟🌟🌟🌟
  6. 101 ESSAYS THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK by Brianna West // Currently reading at 18%

While the rating has been meh, it honestly has been a weird reading month. THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY was actually comforting and bittersweet, but the characters were unbearable. SIREN QUEEN was intriguing but didn’t really hold my attention; I DNF’ed it for now but might pick it back up again later. THE GHOST GARDEN was really quick and interesting, albeit a bit too young for me. I wish it was longer! IN THE VANISHER’S PALACE was also an interesting, immersive read; despite its length it truly felt well developed but at the same time… my meagre imagination couldn’t keep up lol. CLAP WHEN YOU LAND was a great read, Acevedo has surely become one of my favorite author/narrators! And finally, I’m around 18% in 101 ESSAYS THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK but so far it’s been… meh. Easy to read, but also felt not genuine and some advice were… not it? Will need to read a bit more (~35-40%) before making my decision whether to continue or stop reading.

  2. DARK WATERS by Katherine Arden
  3. GRAVE MERCY by Robin LaFevers

It’s July and I’m a bit at loss at what to read. I want to give IT’S NOT SUMMER WITHOUT YOU a try as I’ve been really missing beachy contemporary, but I won’t force myself and just DNF if I don’t like it. I also know I want to read DARK WATERS a read before the final book in the series comes out in August. And finally, it’s been a while since I read high fantasy so I’m going to pick up GRAVE MERCY (assassin nuns!!!) or GRACELING.

Life has continue being great in June! The weather has been a bit brighter- it doesn’t rain everyday anymore and the sun has been shining, but the air is still cool instead of being hot and humid. I received some amazing news from my friends, really excited on where they’re heading in life! I also have been exploring the town more; going to cafes, beaches, and karaoke. In fact, karaoke really took over our lives lol I think there was a point where we went twice a week, on a weekdays?? 😅

My body has been really suffering this month though. I’ve been buying coffees everyday and the coffees here all use brown sugar. It’s a lot of sugar; you should google “brown sugar coffee indonesian” to see what I meant. At the same time, I haven’t got time time to workout as much as before. It’s not that I worked out intensively everyday either, but I used to at least did some light exercise for 10 minutes everyday 😥 So yeah my goal in July is probably to reduce my sugar intake and exercise more lol.

It’s my birthday month in July and I… don’t know how I feel about that. I used to hate birthdays and got really anxious about it, but haven’t been feeling it in a while. The events in the recent years though… Not only I’m having the normal “oh my god time is running out” adulting crisis, it seems like the whole world is just… getting worse. It’s such a scary thought, tbh.

Media wise, so many series coming out in June! We have Stranger Things 4, The Umbrella Academy 3, and Dear M. I haven’t really been in the mood to watch anything though- I did watch Emma but not anything else. Probably because I’ve been distracted with a lot of k-pop, SO MANY CONCERTS! At the beginning of the month we have SKZ Maniac Concert in Japan and if you’ve seen SKZ concerts before, their performance and energy is just amazing! Then we have Seventeen Be The Sun tour in Korea, at the exact same date with NCT 127 The Link Tokyo Dome concert in Japan 😭 I swear my timeline went insane those two days, it’s really hard to keep up because the tweets are posted at lighting speed 😭

To all of you who went and share the excitement on twitter, thank you for sharing with us international fans really 😭🥺

On the other news… Seventeen is confirmed to come to Jakarta and NCT 127 will be announced soon! I have a feeling SKZ will come too in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2022, so right now I’m just scrambling to save up. Especially after seeing that PH’s Be the Sun ticket prices… 😭

In terms of music, June is surprisingly a k-pop-less month! I gravitated towards western and classical music this month, along with some latin and bollywood pop lol. It’s been very… diverse to say the least. My favorite this month was Halsey’s So Good– I remember scrolling twitter and seeing all the hype and got curious, only to understand what people meant and promptly fall in love with the song 🥺 Like, I felt that song. Not a new finding, but Besos En Guerra is a song I like to listen in the afternoon to lift my spirit up lol. And finally, Nayeon released her solo debut and her song with Felix, NO PROBLEM, is such a summer bop! I really love how their voice sounded together and wish I did my summer kpop recommendations song a bit later so I can include this song.

  2. I felt that “oh my god time is running out”. I’m also celebrating my birthday this July and it truly feels like I’m just getting my life back together, but I don’t have enough time to enjoy. I felt like the pandemic robbed those years we spent in lockdown.

  3. happy early birthday!! i hope you don’t get too bogged down by worries about growing up and get to celebrate a little bit ❤ and ah i'm the same with exercising… i really need to get back into it haha. and i hope you love graceling if you end up picking it up!! love that book so much ❤ happy july!!

  5. I’m cackling so much because wow do I resonate with The Summer I Turned Pretty being bittersweet and the characters being unbearable. I do want to reread the books but I have a feeling it may make me scream because I did first read them as a mid teen, which even then I did find some of the things to be scream worthy in frustration. OMG my timeline went bonkers when SKZ had their concerts but I love all stay who shared the clips they took the clips have given me much life. Hope you have a wonderful July and happy early birthday!

  6. I am really intrigued by Siren Queen, but haven’t had a chance to pick it up. I hope it is better at grabbing your attention next time you decide to give it a go. So glad you enjoyed Clap When You Land. That book made me cry so much. Despite you mixed feelings, I hope this birthday month goes well for you.

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONTH!!! I’m sorry to see you didn’t enjoy Siren Queen, that’s a book I’ve been interested in but never really got around to picking up. In other news I want to drink your coffee because YUM!?!?

  8. I hope you enjoy Dark Waters when you read it, I loved it and cannot wait for the final book to come out 🥰 I’m happy to hear that you had a good time in June! I’m caught up with Stranger Things and currently watching TUA, July has been a good month for shows 😊
